Haaveiden ryöstö tuskaa tuottaa

This time only in Finnish, sorry. And next thing is going to be only in Finnish and Swedish. So sorry to my international readers.

Vappurevyy Seinäjoen Kaupunginteatterissa
01.05.2012
Jyri Lahtinen, Ville Salonen, Leena Rousti, Anne Vihelä, Sami Vartiainen, Jouko Enkelnotko

Suostuin kuitenkin reissuun ja millaisen show'n sainkaan kokea.

Jyri Lahtinen Kreivi von Krolockina

Seinäjoen kaupunginteatterissa esitettiin musikaalia Tanz der Vampire (suomenkielisen version nimi oli Dance of the Vampires, mutta suurin osa taisi kutsua spektaakkelia suomalaisittain Vampyyrien tanssiksi), jonka näin hiukan reilu kuukausi sitten.

Upeita esityksiä musikaaleista West Side Story, A Little Night Music ja Chess. Potti kuitenkin alkoi räjähtää Sami Vartiaisen esittäessä musikaalin Singing in the Rain nimikkonumeron. Miksi?

Etukäteen olin myös kuullut Ville Salosen ja Leena Roustin esittävän All I Ask of You -kappaleen lempimusikaalistani The Phantom of the Opera. Olin totta kai innoissani, eivätkä kumpikaan esiintyjistä tuottaneet pettymystä laulutaidoiltaan. Koska osaan lähes koko PotO:n liberton ulkoa, korvana särähtivät muutamat 'virheet' sanoissa.
All I Ask of You unohtui kuitenkin mielestä kun Rousti yritti purra Salosta vampyyrinhampaillaan.

Ville Salonen Alfredina

Eikä matka loppunut siihen. Ville Salonen esitti entisen roolihahmonsa Alfredin puvussa kappaleen Sarah'lle (Für Sarah). Oliko vampyyri-fanien helliminen siinä? Ei tietenkään.
Tällä kertaa Jouko Enkelnotko ja Ville Salonen esittivät kappaleen Kun rakastut (Wenn Liebe in dir Ist) mutta tällä kertaa vaihaten roolinsa. Esityksen jälkeen Enkelnotko palasi lavalle ja ilmoitti Herbertinä olevansa pahoillaan isänsä (Kreivi von Krolockin) puolesta.

Jyri Lahtinen Kreivi von Krolockina

Ja potti räjähti. Sitä näkyä ei saa pois mielestään. Jyri Lahtinen ylitti itsensä humalaisena kreivi von Krolockina. Sillä hetkellä minä en nähnyt Lahtista esittämässä humalaista vampyyrikreiviä. Lavalla todella oli täydessä tuubassa oleva vampyyri. Loistavaa, loistavaa!
Entäpä sitten? Upeita esityksiä muun muassa musikaaleista Cabaret ja Rocky Horror Show. Ja sitten konsertti tuntui loppuvan aivan liian nopeasti.

Leena Rousti

Kristina från Duvemåla at Svenska Teatern
24.4.2012

I'll tell first a little story about dreams which came true.

Maria Ylipää and Robert Noack Photo: Cata Portin
The story of Kristina från Duvemåla follows the life of Kristina and her husband Karl-Oskar all the way from their marriage to America. They see death among their loved ones and life is not easy in Sweden nor in America.

The role of Kristina is played by Maria Ylipää in this production. Maria - who? She has previously done roles of Evita in Evita and Elphaba in Wicked for example. I've been a fan of hers since I saw Wicked for the first time. I was really looking for to see her as Kristina after hearing so much good things about her in that role.
Usually the role of Karl-Oskar is played by Robert Noack. And now it's important that you don't get me wrong, I have absolutely nothing against him.
But I didn't want to see him as Karl-Oskar.
Why? Because the understudy for the role is Glenn Daniel Nilsson. Who? Remember the ÅST production of Les Mis? He was Marius during the first seasons (2010-2011). No, I never did see him. But I wanted, I really wanted. So, I was so happy to know that he is in the ensemble of Kristina från Duvemåla and an understudy for the role of Karl-Oskar.
Well dreams do come true sometimes. When we (me with my Swedish group) arrived to the theatre I saw papers on doors and walls telling that "Glen Daniel Nilsson does the role of Karl-Oskar tonight".
Is it that hard to write his name right?
But well, I was so happy that "my dream cast" of Kristina was on stage the day I saw it.

And while talking about the cast, let's just tell how they was when I saw them.

Robert Noack and Maria Ylipää with ensemble Photo: Cata Portin
Maria Ylipää never fails to amaze me. Her voice is gorgeous and her acting is great. And after hearing how she was praised about her role as Kristina, my hopes were high. Yes, she did good. But I guess she wasn't at her best when I saw her. I actually enjoyed her more as Elphaba than as Kristina. But I'm sure can do better with that role. She just didn't make Kristina so real to me. Maybe I should see her again as Kristina so I could tell how she really is in the role.

Lately I've seen many understudies, all of them has been at least as good as principals. I can't say how Robert Noack does the role of Karl-Oskar, but oh yes, Glenn Daniel Nilsson did the role so well. I couldn't have asked more of the role. He was really lovable towards Kristina, he had his mad moments... He was realistic. And his voice, it sounded great! I started to cry for the first time during the show when he sang Stanna. It was so beautiful. As I told, I don't know how Robert Noack is in the role, but I wish Glenn would be a principal Karl-Oskar in the future.

Other mainroles: Oskar Nilsson did very well as Karl-Oskar's brother Robert. He was the most reliable character for me in the musical. And his voice wasn't bad, he sang Guldet Blev till Sand so beautifully.
Birthe Wingren was powerful as Ulrika from Västerghöl. Loved how she danced during Löss and how strong her voice was.
The ensemble was great too, even thoug it was sometimes hard for a Finnish-speaking-girl to understand what they were singing.

About the musical itself. The story is beautiful and I love the score. The set was beautiful, after seeing it I don't even think why did it cost so much. Costumes were also good.
But then there is something that started to bother me right after the end. I don't know if it depends on my skills wth Swedish, but the story was hard to follow in some parts. And the most important thing that bothered me.
The musical didn't move me like I wished it would.

I heard everyone who had seen it, to tell how great it was. Actually I didn't find it that amusing. It's good musical but maybe I should see it again to enjoy every part of it. As on of my friends once said, you can tell something about how good musical is by how much do I cry.
I cried during Kristina. Only few parts including Stanna and Du måste finnas. But when someone died, it didn't move me so much. Only once during the musical I felt really bad when someone died. Only once.
I take one of my favourite musicals, Les Misérables, to an example. I really cry during it. It feels bad in my heart when people die. Kristina didn't make me feel same way.
And other thing still. That musical could be little bit shorther. It takes over 3 and half hours. It's long time. I would have made it little shorter. But this is thing that the creators of this musical have decided. And I must deal with it.

Maria Ylipää Photo: Cata Portin
After all the good reviews and everyone telling how good it is and how you should see it, I think the musical isn't that special. But still I recommend to see it, to see if it's your thing or not. The cast is amazing, music is gorgeous and the story is beautiful.

For those who don't understand Swedish, you can get one of those little maschines with texts if you want to. I didn't take one, so I could just watch the musical. But maybe it would have been great help with understanding some parts.

Another tip! They're selling the complete cast recording from the Malmö production at the theatre. It's worth buying, the cast is almost as good as the on in Svenska Teatern. It gives more time to go through the musical in your mind.

It's been two months and a day since Les Misérables closed at Åbo Svenska Teater. And I returned to Turku.

It was a schooltrip. But at the very moment when I saw the railwaystation of Kupittaa and saw a train I felt home. Like I was going to see Les Mis again. Like the show never closed.
Then I saw the railwaystation of Turku. I watched out from the window of the bus. I saw a street I walked to ÅST..
I noticed tears on my cheeks.

Later we had some free time. We went to the center of the town. And then I saw it. The beautiful yellow building. I saw the beautiful doors of the theatre. I think I started to cry again. There may not have been tears, but I was crying.

We went in to the shopping centre next to ÅST. I saw the stage door. I saw that same lady selling tickets who had been there everytime I went to ÅST.
We walked towards a café. For everyone else it was just a cafe. But I saw a free table there. I sat there. I met some cast members. And yes, my soul cried even more.
Stairs. "I saw Josefine Isaksson here" thought I.

The flowershop. The Subway. All my memories.

And then, when we were going to the place we were supposed to meet others from that school trip. I saw it.
A bus. A Les Mis bus. I saw Mikaela Tidermark's face smiling. I saw Tomi Metsäketo as Marius.
A part of me broke.

That bus tells something about being a fangirl of this production. It has been over two months since the show closed. But that bus still goes on telling everyone that Les Misérables had the new premiere in October 2011.
And I'm still showing my love to the production. The show is gone. But I'm still going on.

Åbo Svenska Teater and Les Misérables.
Thank you. I miss you every day.

But

Tanz der Vampire at Seinäjoki city theatre
24.3.2012 - matinee

After hearing so much love for Tanz der Vampire and the production in Seinäjoki, I had to go to see it.
And it wasn't exactly like I thought it would be. Do not get me wrong, it was awesome. But there were some thing that didn't amaze me like I hoped. Because it was the second-to-last show, the audience was simply screaming, applauding everything. Yes, never seen an audience like that! And it made the show even better.

To say the something about the plot: the story is based by Roman Polanski's film. The first time the musical was staged in Wien on 1997. The Finnish production was the first to be non-replica. The story is about  Professor Abronsius and his assistant who are hunting vampires in Transylvania. They meet Sarah and her parents, Chagal and Rebecca, and the assistant, Alfred, falls in love with Sarah. Alfred is not the only one who loves Sarah. Alfred's rival is a vampire, Count von Krolock. The story also features many vampires, count's homosexual son Herbert, Chagal's lover Magda and count's servant Koukol.

My seat was on the eighth row and the seat was very good. I saw everything. The set was beautiful. Some videos were used to help changing the scene. And they worked pretty well, even though I didn't like them when the show started. The score was beautiful and the translation. Oh god, the translation was so great! I think I have never heard better translation for a musical. Thank you for a great job Marika Hakola!

To talk about the cast: it was great. I got to know after the show that I had an understudy as Koukol. The role is usually played by Antti Railio but my Koukol was Mikko Kesäniemi. Otherwise everyone was there.
And there is one word to describe the cast: wow. Jyri Lahtinen did amazing job as Count von Krolock. His voice was just phenomenal. It blew my mind away. I have previously seen Raili Raitala in the ensemble of Wicked in Helsinki city theatre. But well, she didn't blow my mind away like Lahtinen did. She has good voice, but I didn't find her so special.
Ville Salonen was adorable as Alfred. He has a very good voice and his acting was great. He made my like his character so much. Esa Ahonen (Professor Abronsius) was one of my favorites. He was funny. Ahonen really had something deep in his character. And well, just couldn't help but love how he said ”NYHVERÖ. Nyhverönyhverönyhverö!” (hard to translate but almost same thing as coward).
I had heard many good things about Jouko Enkelnotko's version of Herbert. Oh yes, he was great. Someone may have thought that Herbert would be cute boy, but Enkelnotko isn't like a pretty boy. His Herbert was elegant and funny. I really liked the way he did the role. Heikki Vainionpää and Leena Rousti did also well as Chagal and his wife Rebecca. They weren't as good as Salonen, Ahonen and Enkelnotko were but I liked both of them. The ensemble was great. And the dancers – they were amazing! I really liked them.

And just because I need to fangirl about this. During the last scene Alfred and Sarah who have turned into vampires come to the audience. And they ”bite” some people in the audience. Even though my seat was fifth from the corner, Alfred came to bite me. YES. I have been bitten by a vampire today.

The sad thing is that the production closed today. Why on earth, may I ask? I know that people would have gone to see it many times! But well, we can't do anything. The production is closed. I'm sure that everyone at the theatre had an amazing day today. I did too.
I hope to see this musical again in Finland someday. It really deserves to be performed again.

Good news! She's dead!

Well, no one is dead.

But I'm pretty excited. I got to know today the whole cast of Next to Normal in Wasa Teater (almost a month after they told it!)

Anna-Maria Hallgarn - Diana
Sören Lillkung - Dan
Mikaela Tidermark - Natalie
Johan Aspelin - Doctor Fine/Doctor Madden (?)
Markus Lytts - Gabe (?)
Samuel Harjanne - Henry (?)

These are so wonderful news! Sören Lillkung played Javert in Åbo Svenska Teater's Les Misérables. Samuel Harjanne did the role of Enjolras on the last four weeks in the sma eproduction and Mikaela Tidermark was Cosette from fall 2011.

I'm more than excited! Planning to go to see the premiere and the last show. Maybe something between them too!

Another story must begin

I thought it would be time to tell a little about my history with musicals.

My story begins at the end of 2006. I was watching AMVs (Anime Music Videos) on YouTube when there was a video with a song that stucked in my head. I just played it on repeat for goodness knows how many times.
Nowadays I can’t stand the version of that song. It was from The Phantom of the Opera (2004). And it was the title song.
Well I continued my Phantom-obsession. I read the original book by Gaston Leroux. And then I got to see the movie.

I loved it back then. It’s visually beautiful movie. And the score. I still love Andrew Lloyd Webber’s music. But the singers aren’t that great.

It was the start of the great obsession. I continued with The Phantom of the Opera. I got to listen the Original London cast Recording, but back then I didn’t like it. Nowadays I love it. Michael Crawford makes awesome Phantom. The Phantom of the Opera was my first musical. And it’s still my favorite musical.

In July 2010 I travelled to London. To West End. For the first time. I saw only one show but it changed everything.
Guess twice which musical I saw. Yes, it was The Phantom. And that night was perfect. I’ve been a huge fan of Gina Beck since that day. She was Christine on that night. Other wise the show just blew my mind.

In the summer 2010 I heard that Wicked would be in Finland in autumn. I wasn’t that interested. But when I heard that many people had liked it, I decided to go to watch it. In January 2011 I saw it in Helsinki citytheatre. Maybe I will write someday about the change that Wicked made in me. Well, it was great to see that musical again in May.

In autumn 2011 I saw couple of musicals. Next to Normal, Les Misérables, The Sound of Music, Striking 12, the 25th Anniversary of The Phantom of the Opera... Since September 2011 I’ve seen at least one musical per month. Some of them have made me think of myself and what I want to be. One of them made an awesome adventure in my life.
Next time I’ll go to see Tanz der Vampire (Dance of the Vampires) in Seinäjoki. Then it’s time for Kristina från Duvemåla. And then? Some great musicals in autumn (like Jesus Christ Superstar, Next to Normal in Vaasa, HAIR, Aladdin and RENT).

Och det var ingen dröm

This time I'll present my post in three languages: in Swedish, in English and in Finnish.

In English

The 19th of November 2011
I went to Turku with my friend Siiri. We saw a musical which name is Les Misérables. It was the last performance for an actor who played the role of Enjolras. His name is Rune Sæter. It was the first time when I saw that musical. And it might have been the last time.
I have told about what happened after the show on my other blog. I drew pictures for the cast, they brought them to the stage after the show. I met Rune Sæter and got a picture with him.
A day after that day I got an e-mail from Mikaela Tidermark who played the role of Cosette.
The 21st of January 2012
My friend bought me a ticket for the show of Les Misérables. We had our seats on the first row. Because Mikaela Tidermark had sent me an e-mail in November, I had drawn her another picture. So, what happened? The show was amazing! After the show Mikaela brought my picture to the stage. I was so happy.
But I knew it was second-to-last time.
The 11th of February 2012
Yesterday I went to Turku for the last time. I met Siiri and our American friend Lida. We saw some actors and they talked with us.
I had heard that some of the actors had been ill. But all of them were there. I heard how some of them had some problems with their voices. But it couldn't spoil my night. I cried for three hours.
After the show actors threw roses to the audience. Some of them had chosen a special person whom they gave their flower. Mikaela Tidermark gave me her rose. Then they had a speech and encore. The director, Georg Malvius, told how they who have done a great work like Les Misérables become your another family. Encore was "Än en dag". I couldn't help but cry. That was a beautiful ending.
After the show we met Sören Lillkung, who played the role of Javert. He talked with us. Then Mikaela came. She hugged us. She told that she was sick and had fever. Poor thing! We had to leave and we ran to our train and went home.

What  has this musical given to me? Hope. Friends. Something I will never forget. Les Misérables is a special musical. And I will never see it on the same way. And Turku. It will never be the same city again.

Les Misérables has changed me. I will never forget. Åbo Svenska Teater's Les Misérables will stay in my heart.

Ja vielä suomeksi.

19 marraskuuta 2011
Matkustin Turkuun ystäväni Siirin kanssa. Näimme musikaalin, jonka nimi on Les Misérables. Hänen nimensä on Rune Sæter.
11 helmikuuta 2012
Eilen matkustin Turkuun viimeisen kerran. Tapasin Siirin ja amerikkalaisen ystävämme Lidan. Näimme joitain näyttelijöitä ja he puhuivat kanssamme.
Olin kuullut, että jotkut näyttelijät olivat olleet sairaana. Mutta he kaikki olivat siellä. Kuulin kuinka joillain oli ongelmia äänensä kanssa. Mutta se ei pystynyt pilaamaan iltaani. Itkin kolmen tunnin ajan.

Toivoa. Ystäviä. Jotain jota en unohda koskaan. Les Misérables on erikoinen musikaali.

Les Misérables on muuttanut minua. Minä en koskaan unohda. Åbo Svenska Teaterin Les Misérables jää minun sydämeeni.
